history

the city was founded by the greeks who gave it the name of nikaia, in honor of the goddess nike, the goddess of victory, after winning the battle against the ligurians. in the middle of the year, the saracens sacked and destroyed 800 nice. in the middle ages it was allied with pisa against genoa, and later fell into the hands of the counts of provence and then of savoy. the city was the birthplace of garibaldi, who promoted the annexation of nice to italy.
