What makes a good food tasting?

Here at SevenEvents our aim is to take the stress out of events and assist with those elements of an event that our clients find difficult or that they need extra support, knowledge and expertise with.

One part of the event process that our clients still love to do is the all important tasting.

With Christmas not that far away now we’re in full swing in terms of final preparations for the Christmas parties that we have booked. This week we set off to Tobacco Dock with our client to taste the menu proposed for their event. Taking a slightly different track, Tobacco Dock are essentially giving a set menu of canapes, finger food, bowl food and dessert canapes. Knowing how many dietaries we need to cater for nowadays the prospect of a set menu with no choices to be made surprised me slightly, however I took a look at the menu and already my mouth started to water!

I hold my hands up that in this job we taste a lot of food – so to get a menu that already grabs your interest is always a good start.

Tobacco Dock are really well set up for a tasting with a special ‘tasting room’ within their office (I’m sure no one wants to sit too close however as you’d constantly be hungry) so already we were impressed from the outset.

What was great to see was that a lot of thought had gone into the structure of the menu. As event organisers we often spend our time asking for non alcoholic alternatives for arrival drinks or more exciting vegetarian options, so to be poured an elderflower fizz on arrival (as well as the obligatory prosecco) made me smile already.

Plus I was handed a menu with notes sheet – great organisation too.

The food I have to say was of a really excellent standard – there was only one finger food I decided I wasn’t as keen on as the rest, and that was me getting picky – and the portion size was good. This group are not going to go hungry!

Everything was presented like it would be on the night so there will be no surprises and despite the set menu, the venue couldn’t be more helpful to make changes to cater for the vegan, halal and gluten free dietaries we’re expecting.

The client left happy, feeling like all bases were covered, and full as there was so much food!

So as for what makes a good food tasting…. A good menu, flexibility to make changes, well executed food and in this case the best warm sugar dusted caramel doughnut I’ve tasted in many a month – delicious!!
